What is Direct Sowing?

Direct sowing means planting seeds directly in the garden soil where they will grow to maturity, rather than starting them indoors in seed trays or containers. Some plants prefer direct sowing because they do not transplant well, while others benefit from being started in trays and moved outdoors when they are stronger

Choosing a Seed Starting Mix

A good seed-starting mix should be light, well-draining, and nutrient-rich to support germination and seedling development. Look for mixes that contain:

• Peat moss or coconut coir for moisture retention

• Perlite for aeration

• Vermiculite providing minerals

• Compost or worm castings for added nutrients

Sowing Seeds

Soil Temperature for Planting

• Most seeds germinate best in soil temperatures between 60-85°F.

• Use a soil thermometer to check temperatures before sowing.

Container Size & Soil Depth

• Start with seed trays or small pots before transplanting, if necessary.

• Ensure containers have drainage holes to prevent root rot.

• Use appropriate soil depth based on plant needs (see individual guides below).

Sun Exposure

• Most seeds require full sun (6-8 hours daily) once germinated.

• If starting indoors, place trays near a sunny window or use grow lights.

Watering

• Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Transplanting
